CMDA Student's Page

CMDA National has put together a nice student page. You can download a Life Support MP3. It has interviews aimed more at students and residents. (Students know what an MP3 is. Geezers like me have to look it up!) You can apparently download to your iPod and listen while you walk or work out. Check it out.

Hygeine Hypothesis

The hygeine hypothesis says that being too clean can cause problems with autoimmune disease. Here is a short link. I've seen it related to Crohn's disease as well. DenverDocWife grew up on a farm in Kentucky, drank water out of the cow pond when she was thirsty as a child. She has no allergies, poison ivy doesn't touch her. I grew up in Southeast Denver suburbs and every spring the grass pollens get me. Hm. Hope I don't get Crohn's!

Alpha and Omega?

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae.
The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm.
Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

So what do I think? If you know the Alpha and Omega of the Word, that's all you need!

The Seventh Friend

This was put up by the Avista Hospital Pastoral Care Department:

When I was first diagnosed with cancer:
My first friend came and expressed shock by saying, "I can't believe that you have cancer; I always thought that you were active and healthy." He left and I felt alienated and somehow very different.
My second friend came and brought me information about treatments used for cancer and said, "Whatever you do, don't take chemotherapy. It's a poison." He left and I felt scared and confused.
My third friend came and tried to answer my "whys" with the statement, "Perhaps God is disciplining you for some sin in your life." He left and I felt guilty.
My fourth friend came and told me, "If your faith is great enough God will heal you." He left and I felt that my faith must be inadequate.
My fifth friend came and told me to remember, "All things work together for good." He left and I felt angry.
My sixth friend never came at all. I felt sad and alone.
My seventh friend came and held my hand and said, "I care. I'm here. I want to help you through this." He left and I felt loved.

Linda Mae Richardson, The Victory in the Valley.

Lord, remind us never to say to a patient, "There is nothing more I can do for you." We can always do something to care for a patient, even if we have nothing left effective for their particular disease.

Quote that made me smile, sort of

Most people are bothered by those passages in Scripture which they cannot understand; but as for me, I always noticed that the passages in Scripture which trouble me most are those which I do understand. --Mark Twain

How about this one:
But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Matthew 6:15. Seems pretty easy to understand. Makes me sweat!

What scripture quote gets you?

Quandaries in Health Care conference

University of Colorado Bioethics has a conference in Aspen Sept. 14-16 if you are interested.

Donations On LIne

DenverDoc has strayed into the wilds of the internet, and installed a PayPal button on the website. Denver CMDA is a qualified non-profit, and we would love some donations to help us fund meals for medical students and outside speakers. Just go down to the "make a donation" button and follow the directions. I don't want to email out the button because the internet is a bit wild sometimes. I've just tried it out and it took my American Express just fine. PayPal is a reliable service.
