Option line for problem pregnancies

Here is some "spam" that came in on an email to me. Optionline is a group that provides help for crisis pregnancies, and they have an online advertising service to try to reach young women. Seems like a reasonable service; consider it!

Beach Party Canceled!

This weekend's (January 27th) beach party had to be canceled. Bummer, dudes. But keep an eye out for future events! Resident's calendar is here. Student's calendar here. Graduates calendar here.

Missions Ministries opens clinic in Juarez, Mexico

I've been on two housebuilding trips with Missions Ministries, and took my daughter on one. It was a great short term experience and I highly recommend it. On the first trip, swinging a hammer, speaking to Mateo in my (very broken) Spanish, I told him I was a doctor. He asked me what on Earth I was doing swinging a hammer, and I replied that people need houses. He told me to come back and "build bodies" next time.

So now they have built a clinic in Juarez. It is a beautful facility with rooms, food, and a nice modern clinic area with multiple exam rooms. I got to see it in a rough state on the second trip. It's a long one day drive, a short flight to El Paso from Denver. Here is a note from Jeff Varnell, MD, surgeon:

Jim – thanks again for your help with our Missions Ministries in Juarez. As you know, we have constructed a family Health Center in the colonias (the poorest section) of Juarez. This is part of a larger complex including housing, a cafeteria and meeting area for the missionary groups that come down to build houses and churches and volunteer in the Health Center. The Center itself has four exam rooms, two dental chairs, a pharmacy, a lab area, and a minor procedure room, with office and administrative space. Our mission is to provide care for the families in the area, for acute minor illnesses and chronic problems with an emphasis on education and prevention, and we plan on maintaining records for recurring patients. Typical teams would consist of 5-15 volunteers who would work for 2-5 days. They would present to El Paso (either driving or flying) where we would pick them up for transportation over the border (passports are helpful, but usually only birth certificates of driver licenses are necessary). \We would ask that teams bring medications so we can keep up our stock in the pharmacy; additionally there would be charges for room and board. You can see some photos and descriptions on our website at www.missionsministries.org . Teams are welcomed at any time during the year but we ask for as early notification as possible to avoid conflict with other building and medical teams. You can also call me with any questions at 303-437-3655.

Illinois Testimony on Stem Cells

Joe Carter (evangelical outpost) and Sarah Flashing, both of Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity near Chicago, testified recently in Illinois about the number of eggs needed for some proposals in embryonic stem cell research. I met both of them last May in Chicago at the Center and they are good, smart people.

Mentor Needed for Med Student/Engineer Couple

There is a female medical student, married to an electrical engineer, moving to Denver for 3rd and 4th year rotations. They would like a female doc with a non-medical husband to mentor them. This can be as simple as an occasional dinner or more elaborate. Please email us back at denvercmda at hotmail dot com and let us know if the Spirit leads you.

Polling data on Abortion

Here is the primary site. Interesting how you can slice and dice this data. Looks like a clear majority favor at least some restrictions on abortion, in contrast to the widely stated view that "a majority of Americans want free access to reproductive choice." The Susan B. Anthony website has more information as we approach the anniversary of Roe v Wade.

Student CHF Notes and Calendar Update

Hey CHF-ers! Thanks to all who put together the skating event on Friday, we had a wonderful time!

CMDA Singles Conference in February

CMDA has an amazing list of conferences. This one is in Buena Vista, Colorado, close to home. ALMOST makes me want to be single, just so I could go! (Hopefully DenverDocWife is not reading this.) I did say ALMOST, sweetheart.

The Secret: How to Live a Fruitful Christian Life WEDNESDAY

Dr. Chen will be speaking on "THE SECRET: How to live a fruitful Christian life" to the Student Group at their usual location Wednesday, Jan 18th. Students love for us older dudes to show up. At the Christmas party, one student told me she "loved to get some wisdom from the graduates." I told her "I love to be thought wise!" The more intergenerational we can become, the stronger we will grow.

Contraception and Infertility Guidebooks from CMDA

CMDA has just announced two new books that may be helpful to patients and to clinicians. They cover the Christian response to the challenges of infertility and contraception. Written by an OB-GYN and a pastor, man and woman, they cover the often tricky problems associated with these issues. The links take you to the CMDA website, and they have an online store you can use to order items. I've used the service and it works well.

I just finished listening to the authors on the Christian Doctors Digest, a monthly (more or less) CD that comes from CMDA. The interviews are interesting and the production is professional. Please consider joining CMDA if you are a Christian professional! There are many benefits, but the most important reason is that together we are stronger than separate: "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12.)

Recent Harris poll on religious beliefs of Americans

Here is the link. Most of us still believe in God and an afterlife. Interesting that 82% believe in God but only 60% in the Devil. The triumph of wishful thinking?

Happy New Year!

The Denver CMDA Chapter is suddenly getting energized. We had 70 people (medical students, residents, graduates, nursing students, pharmacy students, dental students, wives, husbands, children, pastors, friends) at our Christmas party, many of whom stayed until the wee hours. We enjoyed Carol Singing around the piano, with our Resident (literally) pianist. There was food, fun, cookie decorating, and of course fellowship. It was a lovely celebration of the holy season.

We also had Al Weir from CMDA National visit with us last year and challenge us to put our faith back into our lives. We joined the Resident's group (CHF-R, Christian Health Fellowship) to discuss Practicing the Presence of God one evening. The mix of believers across generations is so refreshing and powerful.

Next year we have more monthly meetings planned (see below.) Some of us will continue our KRKS radio ministry on the first Wednesday of each month. The medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, etc. students (CHF-S, Christian Health Fellowship) meet every other Wednesday at the medical school. Some of our wives provide food, speakers, and so on to the CHF groups and of course more workers mean more harvest.

This Blog is our effort to bring information to you more rapidly. Please write back to us with suggestions for links, your email and snail mail addresses if you have wandered into the site and want to join us, or any other suggestions.

God is moving here in Denver. Come join us!

ABC News on "Power of Prayer"

Denise (DenverDocWife) just came in and told me there was a story on ABC news about the power of prayer. Here is the link. It looks like one of those double blind, "distance healing" studies like one that was done, I believe, on cardiac patients a number of years ago. Whenever I see these I think of the 40 days in the desert, when Satan tempted Jesus, and He replied, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" (Matthew 4:7). On the other hand, there is John 16:24, "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." I guess the line from the Lord's Prayer says it best: Thy will be done.
