Where is God in disasters?
This is an excellent article in last month's First Things magazine. This line near the end really struck me:
"As for comfort, when we seek it, I can imagine none greater than the happy knowledge that when I see the death of a child I do not see the face of God, but the face of His enemy."
It is easy for us to give platitudes to those who are suffering. There certainly is no question that this is a dangerous world, full of pain.
Other sources I have found on this subject: The Problem of Pain by C. S. Lewis, and Making Sense of Suffering by Peter Kreeft.

Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!
We share with you greetings of Easter joy from the place of Resurrection!
"I am the resurrection and the life," Jesus said. Through the life-giving grace of the new life in Christ we all live and move and have our being. God's mighty act is at once a victory over sin and death and a triumph over all that binds humankind. Yet the first century shouts of "Hosanna!,” the urgent pleas to Jesus from those who lined the road into Jerusalem to “free us now,” are still echoed by the prayers of those who continue to suffer here. The pain of oppression is as real now as it ever was in this Holy Land. Our joy may give us confidence that we can always trust in God's ultimate sovereignty, but in the meantime the failings of ordinary men and women create the weight of injustice.
The renewed peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians have rekindled a spark of optimism that people might live in true peace in this land where so many have died, and so many more have lost land and hope and future. Yet there is little rejoicing.
The "Separation Wall" continues its way to completion around Bethlehem and its neighbors. It serves not only as a prison barricade for the Palestinians who live under its all-seeing eye, but also as a gargantuan obstacle to a just peace. The people of Jalame and Bardale and Jayyous watch as more and more of their land is taken. The people of Beit Hanina and Ramallah are cut off a little more each day from their neighbors. It is apparent that the promised freedom of movement for residents of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is circumscribed in reality by fences, roadblocks, and Israeli soldiers barely out of high school wielding automatic weapons. As has happened so often in the past, peace talks and negotiations divert the world's attention from the on-going building of new illegal Israeli settlements and the appropriation of Palestinian land and rights.
So how is it that we send greetings of Easter joy from a place where darkness seems to be all around us?
We can only answer that God's light shines the brightest in the overwhelming darkness of human sin and oppression. On the first Easter morning the women who loved Jesus walked to his tomb in the shadow of both the city wall and the Roman occupiers. They came only to offer a last measure of respect and mourning. They came in fear and in sorrow. They expected to find armed soldiers and opposition or, at the very least, a heavy stone blocking their way to the one they had loved. Yet they found not death, but life! Not despair, but joy! They came to anoint a body. They ran from the tomb to tell everyone they encountered that God had prevailed.
It is exactly that truth that lays the ground for our joy. And it is our trust in the bringer of joy - the Christ of Easter - that leads us to know that God is not defeated by mortal deeds. We rejoice in the fact that God has commissioned all of us to follow the women who ran from the empty tomb to spread the news of God's victory. We are strengthened by the hope that you will commit yourselves to speak and act against injustice in all its forms - and that you will join us in proclaiming the Good News that life is not found in oppression or human might…that life is not found in one's self-proclaimed superiority…that walls and tears do not bring peace. God has caused light to shine in our darkness, "…and the life was the light of all people." [John 1: 4b]

Dear Denver CMDA members,
Each spring, CMDA hosts 10-15 Campus Leadership Conferences across the USA in order to identify and train next year’s leaders for our CMDA campus groups.
We hope to fly two student leaders from your area to Portland, Oregon, for our annual Campus Leadership Conference, April 15-17, 2005. Students from all over the Western Region arrive Friday and are hosted in homes of local students and doctors. Friday night we will meet for orientation and Saturday for a full day of training. The purpose is to equip them to be next year’s campus leaders and to foster their spiritual and personal growth. The training concludes Saturday evening at a local restaurant.
What an encouragement it is to these young leaders to meet together with their peers from other campuses throughout the west.
In order to make this event happen, we are asking you and your colleagues to contribute a small donation to help cover the cost of airline tickets for two students from (med/den school) to fly to Portland, Oregon. If everyone contributes a little-$25-we will cover the cost of this most important event. We also ask the students to pay a registration fee of $25 to cover some of the meal cost and printing.

John Patrick is coming to town in May
John Patrick, MD, from Ottawa, Canada, is planning a Western Tour again this year. He is often heard on the CMDA monthly audio newsletters, and is an erudite Christian physician and speaker. He is always worth hearing. It looks like he will be here Saturday, May 7th, with probably lunch and dinner meetings split between Denver and Colorado Springs. I’ve been to his sessions in Canada and he is always challenging and well spoken. This is a treat.

I’ve started getting the Southern California, Virginia, and Kansas City newsletters and they have several projects going. It’s pretty easy to find missions trips, actually. If anyone wants to go to Honduras to teach at a university, I have a contact in Denver who is setting up some trips.

Mission Trip to Uganda wants doctors and nurses
Colorado Community Church, Aurora, Colorado, is looking for doctors and
nurses who would like to join us on a mission trip to Uganda, the summer of
2006. You'll need to raise your own support, which will amount to around
$3000 - $3500. We will be working alongside Youth For Christ in Uganda and
some of their current ministries. There are plenty of opportunities for
medical mininstry, such as orphanges, senior ministries, teen pregnancy

June 24 through 25, CMDA and Fuller Seminary are hosting the second annual Healthcare Missions Conference. This will be wonderful opportunity to hear from great speakers, Dave Stevens, Stan Rowland, and Dan Fountain. For healthcare missions, these are foremost authorities. Last year's attendance exceeded their expectations and so we are now expecting to utilize more facilities and have more exhibits.

April 17-24 Dental Outreach to Guatemala will let dentists and dental students serve the Lord with missionary dentist, Dr. Mike Kadera, and also with students and faculty from San Carlos University, in Guatemala City. We'll need a deposit of at least $650 by January 15th, in order to purchase airline tickets for our group. The remainder will be due by March 15. Cost from Los Angeles will be approximately $1250. Alternative Missions is a group of Christian believers that are passionate about doing our part to see God glorified in all nations. For over a decade we have been facilitating long-term works in countries like Mexico, Honduras, and Costa Rica. Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!
We share with you greetings of Easter joy from the place of Resurrection!
"I am the resurrection and the life," Jesus said. Through the life-giving grace of the new life in Christ we all live and move and have our being. God's mighty act is at once a victory over sin and death and a triumph over all that binds humankind. Yet the first century shouts of "Hosanna!,” the urgent pleas to Jesus from those who lined the road into Jerusalem to “free us now,” are still echoed by the prayers of those who continue to suffer here. The pain of oppression is as real now as it ever was in this Holy Land. Our joy may give us confidence that we can always trust in God's ultimate sovereignty, but in the meantime the failings of ordinary men and women create the weight of injustice.
The renewed peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians have rekindled a spark of optimism that people might live in true peace in this land where so many have died, and so many more have lost land and hope and future. Yet there is little rejoicing.
The "Separation Wall" continues its way to completion around Bethlehem and its neighbors. It serves not only as a prison barricade for the Palestinians who live under its all-seeing eye, but also as a gargantuan obstacle to a just peace. The people of Jalame and Bardale and Jayyous watch as more and more of their land is taken. The people of Beit Hanina and Ramallah are cut off a little more each day from their neighbors. It is apparent that the promised freedom of movement for residents of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is circumscribed in reality by fences, roadblocks, and Israeli soldiers barely out of high school wielding automatic weapons. As has happened so often in the past, peace talks and negotiations divert the world's attention from the on-going building of new illegal Israeli settlements and the appropriation of Palestinian land and rights.
So how is it that we send greetings of Easter joy from a place where darkness seems to be all around us?
We can only answer that God's light shines the brightest in the overwhelming darkness of human sin and oppression. On the first Easter morning the women who loved Jesus walked to his tomb in the shadow of both the city wall and the Roman occupiers. They came only to offer a last measure of respect and mourning. They came in fear and in sorrow. They expected to find armed soldiers and opposition or, at the very least, a heavy stone blocking their way to the one they had loved. Yet they found not death, but life! Not despair, but joy! They came to anoint a body. They ran from the tomb to tell everyone they encountered that God had prevailed.
It is exactly that truth that lays the ground for our joy. And it is our trust in the bringer of joy - the Christ of Easter - that leads us to know that God is not defeated by mortal deeds. We rejoice in the fact that God has commissioned all of us to follow the women who ran from the empty tomb to spread the news of God's victory. We are strengthened by the hope that you will commit yourselves to speak and act against injustice in all its forms - and that you will join us in proclaiming the Good News that life is not found in oppression or human might…that life is not found in one's self-proclaimed superiority…that walls and tears do not bring peace. God has caused light to shine in our darkness, "…and the life was the light of all people." [John 1: 4b]

Dear Denver CMDA members,
Each spring, CMDA hosts 10-15 Campus Leadership Conferences across the USA in order to identify and train next year’s leaders for our CMDA campus groups.
We hope to fly two student leaders from your area to Portland, Oregon, for our annual Campus Leadership Conference, April 15-17, 2005. Students from all over the Western Region arrive Friday and are hosted in homes of local students and doctors. Friday night we will meet for orientation and Saturday for a full day of training. The purpose is to equip them to be next year’s campus leaders and to foster their spiritual and personal growth. The training concludes Saturday evening at a local restaurant.
What an encouragement it is to these young leaders to meet together with their peers from other campuses throughout the west.
In order to make this event happen, we are asking you and your colleagues to contribute a small donation to help cover the cost of airline tickets for two students from (med/den school) to fly to Portland, Oregon. If everyone contributes a little-$25-we will cover the cost of this most important event. We also ask the students to pay a registration fee of $25 to cover some of the meal cost and printing.

John Patrick is coming to town in May
John Patrick, MD, from Ottawa, Canada, is planning a Western Tour again this year. He is often heard on the CMDA monthly audio newsletters, and is an erudite Christian physician and speaker. He is always worth hearing. It looks like he will be here Saturday, May 7th, with probably lunch and dinner meetings split between Denver and Colorado Springs. I’ve been to his sessions in Canada and he is always challenging and well spoken. This is a treat.

Mission Trip to Uganda wants doctors and nurses
Colorado Community Church, Aurora, Colorado, is looking for doctors and
nurses who would like to join us on a mission trip to Uganda, the summer of
2006. You'll need to raise your own support, which will amount to around
$3000 - $3500. We will be working alongside Youth For Christ in Uganda and
some of their current ministries. There are plenty of opportunities for
medical mininstry, such as orphanges, senior ministries, teen pregnancy

June 24 through 25, CMDA and Fuller Seminary are hosting the second annual Healthcare Missions Conference. This will be wonderful opportunity to hear from great speakers, Dave Stevens, Stan Rowland, and Dan Fountain. For healthcare missions, these are foremost authorities. Last year's attendance exceeded their expectations and so we are now expecting to utilize more facilities and have more exhibits.

April 17-24 Dental Outreach to Guatemala will let dentists and dental students serve the Lord with missionary dentist, Dr. Mike Kadera, and also with students and faculty from San Carlos University, in Guatemala City. We'll need a deposit of at least $650 by January 15th, in order to purchase airline tickets for our group. The remainder will be due by March 15. Cost from Los Angeles will be approximately $1250. Alternative Missions is a group of Christian believers that are passionate about doing our part to see God glorified in all nations. For over a decade we have been facilitating long-term works in countries like Mexico, Honduras, and Costa Rica. Our missions strategy is fueled by the creative passions that God has given to our staff and ministry partners. We have a dental clinic and a medical clinic set up in Helene, Honduras which is an island near Roatan, Honduras. Most people know Roatan as a one the best dive spots in the world. This year we have a need for dentists and physicians in Jan, Feb, Mar, April, May, June, Sept, and Oct. We are always looking for health care providers to see the island and the mission. We also have a clinic in Cofradia, Mexico just south of Mazola and we just set up a mission in Costa Rica and look forward to trying to establish a medical facility there. We are currently looking at setting up similar missions in Peru and Guatemala. I will be personally going to Helene on April 16-23 but I can arrange a trip for interested health care providers at any time.
