Seminar series on Palliative and Hospice Care

PSL is presenting a series which started Sept 26th and has more sessions coming on 11/14, 1/9/09, 2/13/09, 3/13/09 on various issues in palliative and end of life care. They are Fridays at Noon, Grand Rounds. COPIC is giving a point toward malpractice discounts. Instruction is by Dan Johnson, Lorrie Odom, or Donna Rosenberg. Christian Docs should be interested in this. I believe one of the drivers of the toxic Physician Assisted Suicide movement is our professions abandonment of the dying and our failures to learn about good pain management and depression treatment in the elderly.

Mother Teresa had a quote that almost brought tears to my eyes:
"A beautiful death," she said, "is for people who lived like animals to die like angels — loved and wanted."

The racism of abortion politics

Here is a post by an african-american bishop in Washington, DC. Pretty powerful.

Those of us in medicine realize that African-Americans have a higher incidence of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and prostate cancer among other things. Look at this excerpt from the above link:

Many African Americans are not aware that since the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion throughout all 9 months of pregnancy, the number one cause of death in the African American community has been abortion. We have lost over 13 million lives. To put that in perspective, it is one third of our present Black population. Since 1973, twice as many Black Americans have died from abortion than from AIDS, accidents, violent crimes, cancer, and heart disease combined.
